Don Carty, Former CEO of AMR Corporation, Named Board Chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Americatitle
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Donald J. Carty, retired chairman and
chief executive officer of AMR Corporation, will lead the Big Brothers Big
Sisters of America Board of Directors starting in January 2006. The
announcement about Cartys new position was made today by Jody L. Bilney,
Cartys predecessor as board chair.

Prior to his serving as chair and CEO of AMR, Carty was president of the
corporation. He also served as president of AMR Airline Group and American
Airlines. In addition, Carty was president and CEO of CP Air in Canada during
the mid-1980s.
Bilney, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Openwave
Systems, said that Cartys broad range of expertise at top leadership roles in
the corporate world would help Big Brothers Big Sisters reach its goal of
serving one million children. "Don Carty is a brilliant strategist and
compassionate leader who not only embraces the Big Brothers Big Sisters
mission, but has the ability to lead the organization to tremendous success,"
she said.
Carty said he was deeply honored by being named to the chief volunteer
position at Big Brothers Big Sisters. "The future of our country is tied
inexorably to the future of our youth. Research shows that Big Brothers Big
Sisters has positive benefits for youth. What greater cause could there be
than participating in bringing those benefits to more children," he said.
President George W. Bush appointed Carty to the National Infrastructure
Advisory Committee in 2002, where he served until 2005. In 2003, he was named
an officer of the Order of Canada, that countrys highest honor for lifetime
achievement.
Carty currently sits on the boards of Dell, Inc., Sears Holdings, Inc.,
Placer Dome, Inc., CHC Helicopter Corporation, and Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. In
addition to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America board, he serves on the
board of the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation.
Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of Southern
Methodist University, and the SMU Cox School of Business Executive Board, as
well as the Dallas Theater Center.
Carty is a graduate of Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and of the
Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He is the recipient of an
honorary Doctor of Law from Queens University.
