The Adventure Continues: Author Alexander Kent Returns With a Bangtitle
NEW YORK, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Arguably, the three greatest sailors who
never lived are Horatio Hornblower, Jack Aubrey, and Richard Bolitho.
Their combined exploits have entertained readers since the 1930s, and
inspired an armada of impersonators. The world of maritime fiction is
literally framed and planked upwards from the keels of these fictitious,
sea-going warriors.
Of the three storytellers (Forester, OBrian, and Kent), Bolithos
creator, author Alexander Kent, is the only one still living. Kent has just
finished his newest book, "Band of Brothers" -- a long-overdue novel dealing
with Bolithos early career as a midshipman.
The author has been producing novels regularly since 1958 under his own
name of Douglas Reeman, and under the alias of Alexander Kent since 1968. He
now boasts more than 22 million books sold. They are printed in 16 languages,
including Finnish, Polish, and Portuguese. Japan is their third largest
market.
Kents hero, Richard Bolitho (pronounced Bo-LYE-tho), is a vibrant
manifestation of the Great Age of Sail, when Britain was at war with the
world. It was a time of wooden ships and iron men, of chivalry and honor.
The author saw plenty of real life action in WWII. He was blown up twice,
had ships sunk out from under him, and once spent 11 hours bobbing around the
cold North Sea before being rescued.
Now, 60 years later, Kent has published 27 books about the Napoleonic War.
His latest novel, "Band of Brothers," has just been released in North America.
All the Bolitho novels are stand-alone, not requiring readers to have read
the entire series (although you will certainly want to).
"I wanted to see that splendid, stirring era through the eyes of a Cornish
seafaring family," said the author, of his decision to create Richard Bolitho.
"Richard came into my life ten years after Id already established myself
as a novelist under my real name; His life and career have taken him, and me,
in directions I could never have imagined possible."
